Doug and Ellen took a trip, the Road Trip East in July 2013. They rented a car and headed east from Lafayette, reaching Asheville, North Carolina 8 days (and 5 states) later, where they spent a week before returning home. First stop was Eureka Springs, Arkansas, where spent 2+ visiting friends, touring the quaint town and nearby attractions. Next they worked there way east on 'blue' highways through the southern Ozarks, exploring 4 caves along the way and ending in Mountain View, the Bluegrass capitol of the Ozarks. From there they crossed eastern Arkansas and the Mississippi River into Tennesee. First stop in Tennessee was David Crockett State Park, dedicated to early 19th century woodsman and statesman, Davy Crockett. Then it was up the Natchez Trace Parkway to Nashville, for a stop and visit to The Hermitage, home of President Andrew Jackson. The final round-about leg to Asheville took them east, then south through Great Smoky Mountains National Park, with a slow meandor through Cades Cove, a very special place, and then a drive through the southern Smokies on the southern most section of the Blue Ridge Parkway. While in Asheville they stayed at the "Treehouse", a quaint, but beautiful little retreat in Arden, a small town just south of Asheville. The week in Asheville was highlighted by a tour of the city, visiting with special friends from Davidson, a day visit to Biltmore Estate and a day at magnificent DuPont State Forest. Before heading back to Colorado, the last day in Asheville included watching Abby, the Spoon Lady, and Ben Shirley, of Turned Earth, perform on the city plaza.
