Doug and Ellen took a return trip to Costa Rica in August 2012, with friends from the Boulder County Volunteer Naturalists. As was done on their first trip in 2009, the good people from Cost Rica Sun Tours built a customized tour focusing on the birds, other wildlife and natural wonders of the country, with Alex Arias again as the naturalist guide.

Section I: Cerro de la Muerte area
Cerro de la Muerte: drive from San Jose to the Savegre River valley;
Savegre Valley: our stay at Savegre Lodge and hikes in the Savegre River valley;
Section II: Turrialba area
Turrialba area: drive from the Savegre Valley to Parque Nacional Irazu, then on to Cartago and, finally, to our overnight stop at Villa Florencia near Turrialba;
Section III: Tortuguero
Tortuguero: Evergreen Lodge, the town of Tortuguero and Lagunas del Tortuguero;
Tortuguero Canals: Boat trips on the canals of Parque Nacional Tortuguero;
Section IV: Arenal area
Arenal area: drive from Tortuguero for a 3 day, 2 night visit to Parque Nacional Arenal and the surrounding area;
Section V: Guanacaste Province
Guanacaste: drive from Arenal to Guanacaste for a 4 day, 3 night visit to Playa de Hermosa, Llanos de Cortes Cataratas, Parque Nacional Rincon, Liberia and Playa del Coca;
