Ellen and Doug took a Travel & Photography Trip to the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve in Colorado's San Luis Valley to participate in a Nature Conservancy Workshop, during the Sandhill Crane Migration Season, in March of 2006.They stayed at the Nature Conservancy's Medano Zapata Ranch and explored the Sand Dunes and the surrounding San Luis Valley.

Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve: The area is comprised of Great Sand Dunes National Park and Great Sand Dunes National Preserve, surrounded by the Nature Conservancy's Medano-Zapata Ranch, San Luis Lakes State Park and Wildlife area and the Rio Grande National Forest. Views from the park complex include the Sand Dunes, wildlife and the Crestone massif, with Crestone Peak, Crestone Needle, Kit Carson Peak, Challenger Peak and Humbolt Peak all towering over 14,000 feet high;
Sandhill Cranes: The main focus of the weekend was observing and photographing Sandhill Cranes throughout the San Luis Valley.
