Doug and Brian took a trip to southwestern Utah in May 2013, to hike and photograph in the San Rafael Swell (Reef), Escalante-Grand Staircase National Monument and Arches National Park areas.

Section I: San Rafael Reef area
Goblin Valley State Park: Camping and exploring in the magical state park, with its hoodoos and other geological wonders;
Bell & Little Wildhorse Canyons: two of the area's most spectacular slot canyons. A 7 mile loop hike up Bell, across the top of the ridge and down Little Wildhorse;
Section II: Escalante-Grand Staircase area
Goblin Valley to Escalante: day trip from Goblin Valley State Park to Escalante, including driving through the Caineville Badlands and briefly exploring Capitol Reef National Park;
Escalante area: exploring the Escalante, Utah area, including the cross-bedded sandstone cliffs, climbing up to the 100 Hands Ancient Puebloan pictograph panel, and hiking to Cedar Mesa Ach;
Lower Calf Creek: day hike along lower Calf Creek to the beautiful 126 foot high Lower Calf Falls;
Devil's Garden: visit to the Devil's Garden, in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, a playground of hoodoos, arches, windows and Easter Island looking formations carved out of the Entrada Sandstone;
Petrified Forest State Park: 1.75 miles of day hike loop trails through the Escalante Petrified Forest State Park, winding through ancient lava flows containing petrified wood and dinosaur bones over 100 million years old.
Section III: Arches area
Escalante to Moab: drive across southern Utah, crossing the Colorado and Hite Bridge and Marina in upper Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and then up from near Blanding to Moab;
Devil's Garden loop trail: a 7+ mile loop trail in Arches National Park, to 8 named arches, including Landscape, Double-O, Navajo, Partition, Pine Tree and Tunnel, plus several unnamed arches and windows along the primitive return trail;
Delicate Arch: visit to Delicate Arch in Arches National Park, including a 3-mile round trip early morning hike to the Arch.
