In April 1999 Doug and Brian took a Hiking and Backpacking in the Grand Canyon, after having driven through rain and snow between Colorado and the South rim. This was a "make-up" hike to get the Tonto trail section around Horseshoe Mesa, that had originally been planned to incorporate in previous fall's trip. The hike began at Grandview Point on the south rim, then descended down the Grandview Trail to Horseshoe Mesa, where they cut down the Miner's Spring spur to Hance Creek, then picked up the Tonto trail around Horseshoe Mesa. They camped at Cottonwood on the northwest side of Horseshoe Mesa, at the junction of the Tonto west and the Cottonwood Creek spur. The following day they climbed back up to Horseshoe Mesa via the Cottonwood spur, then took the Grandview trail back up to the south rim.
