Prologue: Tuesday, May 21, 2002

We assembled at 8 pm in the room above the gift shop of the Best Western Dinosaur Inn in Vernal, Utah - the river guides (from Holiday River Expeditions), the naturalists and the participants. Most were from Colorado, with 2 from Connecticut and a family of 4 from New Hampshire rounding out the group. Two women from Denver were flying in and their plane had to turn back because of the wind and the weather. We had no idea if they would arrive in time to join us. We received a list of the people on the trip, 2 waterproof bags each for the river and a brief overview of the river travel. We left to pack with instructions to meet in the parking lot to caravan to the Holiday warehouse. We knew instinctively that this group, because of our common focus, would gel.
